A ei di’r deryn du?

A ei di’r deryn du
To my dearest love
O cais fy nghangen gu,
For I’m so deep in love.

Ni welaf yn unman
Such a damsel in my sight
A’r ferch mor lân o liw,
She is a beauty bright.

Mae’i gwallt yn felyn aur,
Just like a ring of gold,
A’i phryd fel eira gwyn,
The truth it must be told.

 A ei di’r deryn du?

—Will you go Blackbird?

Macaronic (mixture of two languages) love song using the ‘llatai’ convention of sending a bird as a messenger. Noted in Llanllyfni from the singing of W. Sylvanus Jones, who had learnt it in Carmarthenshire.

Translation is literal and is not intended to be sung.

Will you go, blackbird
To my dearest love
Oh reach out to my branch
For I’m so deep in love.

I do not see anywhere
Such a Damsel in my sight
And the girl so fair of colour,
She is a beauty bright.

His hair is yellow gold,
Just like a ring of gold,
And her complexion as white as snow,
The truth it must be told.

The notation for this song and more is available in the collection
Traditional Songs of the Welsh

Here are two arrangements of the song, by the bands Adran D and Solaference
